The legendary BMW L7 by Karl Lagerfeld – A Custom E38 7 Series

BMW Individual was established in 1991 as a division of M GmbH with the goal of leading the trend towards more individuality by concentrating on customers who were looking for made-to-measure solutions and making tougher demands on their BMW in terms of distinction, design and function. The success story started with a design from Karl Lagerfeld on the E32 7 Serie, which was followed by another two designs over the next few years.

But it’s the BMW L7 by Karl Lagerfeld that will forever remain in the history archives. Karl Lagerfeld was one of the iconic and most prolific fashion designers of the 20th and 21st centuries. He focused on the luxury and modernity of his art. That philosophy was reflected on his E38 BMW 7 Series. The L7 was a stretched out 7 Series with a total length of 131 inches – 10 inches longer than the long-wheelbase 750iL.

The E38 L7, made in 2000, was a small series of 899 pieces, and featured a Chestnut Brown Metallic over Gold Orange Metallic exterior paint. The interior of Lagerfeld’s BMW L7 is decorated with a Chocolate Brown leather. Its uniqueness underlines the stitching. Lagerfeld chose a contrasting orange thread. The infotainment and communication system in the rear, which was state-of-the-art at the time, was pure luxury and, in addition to an on-board telephone, also included a fax machine, VHS player, refrigerator or, as in the case of the Lagerfeld L7, a small safe. A pane of glass and heavy curtains between the first and second row of seats provided more privacy in the rear. The Lagerfeld BMW L7 also had a special designation – Designed by Karl Lagerfeld – decorated in gold on a wooden door.

Under the hood, the E38 L7 featured a 5.4 liter V12 engine with 240 kW / 326 hp and 490 Newton meters of torque. The extra-long 7 Series weighed 2.2 tonnes and therefore took 7 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h. The L7 ultra sedan was the best model of the E38 7 Series and was designed for a special clientele with above-standard requirements in every aspect: from driving comfort features to luxury and state-of-the-art technology on board.

The current photos are from Slovakia where the Karl Lagerfled BMW L7 will be presented to the public from June 22 in the Danubian Gallery of Contemporary Art at THE PRIVATE COLLECTION by BMW.

The BMW 745Le is definitely a clear step up compared to the old 740e model. Those two extra cylinders under the hood make a huge difference and they also offer tuners the possibility of adding some extra power to the mix, on top of what the car comes with as standard. Swiss tuner Dahler is no exception and came up with a kit for the plug-in hybrid 7 Series that would turn it into a proper 750i rival.

The standard BMW 745Le comes with a total of 394 horsepower and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque, figures good enough for basically any sort of need. The torque delivery is instant, the straight-six engine is smooth and the whole car feels like a refined product, with a great balance between speed, luxury and efficiency. With this newfound level of power Dahler infused in it, the 745Le is even better. But what kind of numbers are we talking about here?

Well, according to the Swiss company, they managed to squeeze 408 horsepower out of the internal combustion engine under the hood, basically increasing the output by 122 horsepower. The torque also went up from 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) to 600 Nm (443 lb-ft). The electric motor couldn’t be upgraded for obvious reasons and therefore remains the same, with its 113 horsepower and 265 Nm (195 lb-ft) of torque. Overall, the car can now deliver up to 521 horsepower and 865 Nm (637 lb-ft) of torque.

With these figures, the closes model in terms of performance to it would be the BMW 750i with its massive 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and 530 horsepower/750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque. But even that car would fall short in the torque department. There’s no mention of the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time with these upgraded specs but we’re expecting to see numbers close to the 4.1 seconds of the 750i if not even better, considering this too is an xDrive model.

The flagship BMW 7 Series is due for a refresh in 2022. The work on the upcoming BMW G70 7 Series is well underway. First prototypes were already spotted on the road, including the first ever 7 Series electric model. The new 7 Series will be extensively different from what we’ve been getting used to and will feature not only conventional powerplants, but also hybrid options and full electric ones.

For the first time in the history of the 7 Series, the top model won’t be powered by a V8 or V12 engine. Or even a V16. Instead, we will get a 7 Series flagship model with an all-electric drivetrain. According to sources, the temporary, and potentially the final name, is BMW i7 M60.

With the V12 being phased out, BMW needs a new high-end sedan. So in order to reliably and efficiently produce at least 600 horsepower, they will rely on the new fifth-generation eDrive architecture. The i7 M60 will feature at least two electric motors and will have at least 650 HP to rely on.

All electrified cars will be using the latest battery technology available from BMW and the BEV 7 Series models will have batteries that can hold up to 120 kWh. Those should allow the top 7 Series electric model to cover at least 400 miles (640 km) on a single charge.

Back in 2018, BMW and Porsche joined hands in creating what they call an “ultra-fast” charging station. The station has a charging capacity of up to 450kW and  it can juice up a battery with a 62-mile charge in less than 3 minutes, or a full charge in 15 minutes.

The details around the new i7’s charging capabilities are still scarce, but it’s fair to assume that BMW will use the latest and greatest tech. The upcoming BMW iNEXT will certainly hint at those capabilities.

BMW 7 Series: New efficient I6 diesel units for the luxury flagship

The BMW 7 Series will benefit from the qualities on mild hybrid electrification when the new 730d and 740d versions will be added to the lineup starting July 2020.

The new diesel variants of the 7 Series luxury flagship are powered by extensively reengineered straight-six engines which are now fitted with 48-volt starter generators. The mild hybrid system supports the powerplant and relieves some of the physical stress during the functioning. The 48-volt mild hybrid electric generator also provides a power boost of of 8 kW / 11 PS (11 hp).

If the former 730d delivered a peak output of 195 kW / 265 PS (261 hp), the new electrified diesel unit is now good for 210 kW / 286 PS (282 hp). The increase in peak torque is equally significant, with the new figure topping 650 Nm (a 30 Nm increase compared to the outgoing engine variant), available between 1,500 rpm and 2,500 rpm.

The performance increase is possible thanks to the new dual-stage turbocharging with variable intake geometry and the higher direct injection pressure of 2,700 bar for the commonrail system.

The engine optimization measures that were undertaken also ensure a low combined consumption for the 30d variants of the 7 Series, which are ranging between 4.7 l/100 km and 5.1 l/100 km.

The acceleration times are also further improved by around 0.2 seconds. Now, the rear-driven 730d sprints to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the 730d xDrive is even faster with a time of 5.6 seconds.

The new 740d xDrive and 740Ld xDrive variants are equally engaging. Available solely in all-wheel drive configuration, the range-topping diesel variants of the 7 Series are now more powerful than ever.

The new I6 diesel powerplants boast a 15 kW / 20 PS (20 hp) increase to a new maximum output of 250 kW / 340 PS (335 hp). The peak torque is as well improved by 20 Nm to 700 Nm, available between 1,750 rpm and 2,250 rpm.

Besides the 48-volt mild hybrid technology, the B57 unit powering the new 40d versions also comprises the multi-stage turbocharging with variable intake geometry and the high-pressure Common Rail direct injection system.

These technical solutions have multiple benefits both on the tractive power and the efficient engine operation. The new 740d xDrive accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, shorter by 0.2 seconds compared to the outgoing model. In addition, there are also gains on the side of fuel efficiency, as the overall consumption now drops by around 0.4 liters/100 kilometers.

Furthermore, both the 30d and 40d feature state-of-the-art exhaust gas after-treatment. As part of the BMW BluePerformance technology, the cutting-edge straight-six diesel engines employ a diesel oxidation particulate filter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter.

For cutting down NOx emissions as much as possible, a second dosage unit was added at the outlet of the Selective Catalytic Reducer (SCR) in the close vicinity of the engine. Thus, the two engines are now fully compliant with the stringent EURO 6d emission standard.

Besides the new efficiency-optimized I6 diesel powerplants, the new 7 Series will also host new technical equipment in the form of the Integral Active Steering, which becomes available for all engine variants starting with July 2020.

The optional Integral Active Steering system combines a variable front axle transmission ratio with targeted active steering of the rear wheels. The clever rear-axle steering system is certain to improve both driving dynamics and the maneuvering capabilities at speeds below 3 km/h.

The visual appeal of the 7 Series will be further enhanced by the new Phytonic Blue and BMW Individual Frozen Bluestone metallic exterior paintwork. The premium atmosphere aboard the Bavarian luxury sedan will become even more exquisite thanks to the attractive BMW Individual Smoke White/Night Blue/Black Merino full-grain leather upholstery and the new BMW Individual leather steering wheel.
