BMW iX xDrive50 gets EPA rating – Up to 324 miles

BMW of North America just announced the EPA rating for its flagship BMW iX models. According to a press release, the BMW iX xDrive50 has an EPA rating of 324 miles with 20-inch wheels, 305-miles with 21-inch wheels and 315 miles with 22-inch wheels. The MSRP starts at 83,200 plus $995 Destination and the U.S. market launch is expected in Q1 of 2022. A more powerful iX M60 model, with over 600 hp, will arrive at a later date, and no EPA rating is available yet.

The BMW iX xDrive50 has two electric motors split among the two axles producing 70 kW (500 horsepower) and powered by a battery pack larger than 100 kWh. The BMW iX xDrive50 is also said to have a 0-60 mph time of under five seconds. Plugging the BMW iX xDrive50 into a fast-charging station with 10 percent charge for example, enables its range to be increased by up to 90 miles in just ten minutes at 195 kW. Using the same fast charger, it would take less than 40 minutes to increase the high-voltage battery’s state of charge from 10 to 80 percent.

The curb weight of the middle iX model measures in at 5,659 lbs. Another important metric in the life of a crossover/SUV is the payload. And in the case of the iX xDrive50, BMW published a figure of 1,054 lbs. The list of exterior color is quite diversified: Alpine White, Sapphire Black metallic, Sophisto Grey Brilliant Effect metallic, Mineral White metallic, Phytonic Blue metallic, Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, BMW Individual Storm Bay Blue metallic and BMW Individual Aventurine Red metallic.

When it comes to wheels, the BMW iX features several fashionable Aerodynamic Wheel designs coming in 20-inch, 21-inch or 22-inch dimensions as follows:

  • 20″ Aerodynamic Wheels 1002
  • 21″ Aerodynamic Wheels 1012 with 3D polished finish

Rory Reid is one of the brighter upcoming stars in the automotive journalism field and is now starring in the Fifth Gear show, after a short stint at Top Gear. Today, he’s here to share is views on the new BMW iX. The technological flagship of BMW visited the AutoTrader team and Rory was in charge of reviewing it. This time though we’re looking at the xDrive50 model, not the xDrive40 we checked out yesterday. This is the top of the range version right now, while we’re waiting for the M60 to show up next year at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

As far as the review, Rory is one of the few journalists out there that appreciates BMW’s take on design. While most have been complaining about the huge grilles or squared off shapes, Rory actually put together a video about BMW not too long ago, defending it against the huge backlash it was facing. While we’re aware that some feathers might be ruffled by this new approach, being bold and taking risks is sometimes needed, and that’s exactly what BMW has achieved with the iX.

Will it work out? We’ll have to wait and see, but for now, the world is heavily divided when it comes to the design approach in Munich. Rory had other very interesting things to say about the iX though, and you should check out the video below and let us know if you agree. The first two BMW iX models – xDrive40 and xDrive50 – will arrive later this year. The entry-level iX packs 70 kWh battery for a range of 400 km (249 miles) and 240 kW (300 horsepower). According to BMW, the xDrive40 will around six seconds to get from 0-60 mph. The middle model – iX xDrive50 – has two electric motors split among the two axles producing 70 kW (500 horsepower) and powered by a battery pack larger than 100 kWh.

With that large battery, though, the BMW iX is said to have a range of 600 km (373 miles) on the WLTP-cycle. For the U.S., BMW is claiming around 300 miles of range. The BMW iX xDrive50 is also said to have a 0-60 mph time of under five seconds. The BMW iX xDrive50 can also charge its high-voltage battery at up to 195 kW using a DC fast charger.

These are the best BMW cars we drove in 2021

Despite being challenging, 2021 was a good year for us in terms of test drives. We picked up the slack from the previous year and tested an impressive number of cars: sixty (60). Of course, majority of them were BMW Group models. There were some other brands we managed to review, so it’s fair to say that 2021 has been a busy year for us. As we head into the new year, we wanted to look back and pick our favorite BMW cars we drove in 2021. Next year is shaping up to be equally exciting for us, but as it is the norm today, lots of things can change in a split of a second.

Nico — BMW M5 CS

To be honest, 2021 wasn’t my biggest car year. Due to the lingering effects of Covid, I didn’t go on any press launches and loaner cars weren’t as frequent. Most of my test drives were BMWs, though there were a few Audis, Genesis, and Lexus models sprinkled in. Some of which were genuinely great cars, such as the BMW M3 Competition, Audi RS7 Sportback, Audi RS Q8, and Genesis GV70. However, there can only be one and it was an easy choice — the BMW M5 CS.

Nothing came close, this past year, to offering the level of fun and excitement as the M5 CS. It’s an absolutely brilliant car, one that could be BMW’s best in decades. Not only is it brutally fast — ripping of a 2.8 second 0-60 mph time and a sub-eleven second quarter-mile on a rough, dusty runway — but it’s sensational to drive. The M5 CS offers steering feel, chassis balance, and body control like no other BMW I can remember in recent years.

Then there’s the interior. Carbon fiber bucket seats from the M3 and M4 make the front passengers feel like they’re in a race car, despite being in a big, four-door sedan. Even more interesting, though, is the back seat, which replaces the typical rear bench with two more bucket seats, so the rear passengers don’t miss out on that racecar feel.

If I could choose just one BMW to own from the modern era, I wouldn’t even blink: it’d be the BMW M5 CS.

Horatiu — BMW iX

There is no secret that I’ve been a fan of electric cars for many years. As a fun tidbit, I’m actually on my fourth BMW i3 and it still brings me joy as it did in 2014. So naturally, I was quite excited to finally see some new BMW products with an electric drivetrain. After driving an i4 prototype and then the production car, I was fortunate enough to jump behind the wheel of the new flagship BMW EV: The iX.

The bespoke electric crossover has been in works since 2015 and it is now finally ready to tackle a very competitive segment. Being built on a unique architecture, the BMW iX makes full use of the package by providing not only a smart and practical interior, but also a quite spacious one. The ride is also atypical of a BMW car with a focus on comfort rather than driving dynamics. Yet, it still delivers tons of performance – 516 hp – and a 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds. The electric range is equally important in the iX, so BMW managed to squeeze out 300 miles (EPA rating) from a 105 kWh battery hidden in the floor of the car.

The BMW iX might not be everyone’s cup of tea, and sure, some might still complain about its range, but it is a fantastic product, smartly designed and worthy of the BMW badge.

Gabriel — BMW M3 Competition and iX

As time goes by and technology evolves, it’s getting obvious that electric cars are going to take over in the next 10 to 15 years. We’re already seeing a lot of effort being put into the EV segment and that also reflected my experience this year. Out of the 120 cars I drove this year, almost half were electrified in one way or another. That’s also why the BMW iX is one of the best cars I drove this year with a blue and white roundel on the hood.

The reason why it’s one of my top two is rather simple: it has one of the best suspension setups of all the electric vehicles I had the pleasure of testing out. It’s nimble, smooth, quiet and incredibly comfortable. Sure, the one I tested was an iX xDrive50 model with the optional air suspension tacked on, but it’s quite an eye-opening experience. The iX might have some faults, from the range to the design (for some people) but when it comes to refinement, few electric cars can reach its level.

As for the other car, it would definitely be the M3 Competition (RWD). Why? Pretty simple, actually, it shows that the M engineers still have a place in our very complicated world. This car, in rear-wheel drive guise, is both a beast on the track and a comfortable cruiser whenever you need it to be. The dual character that has been defining M cars for the past 50 years is still there and that’s marvelous in my book. Unlike the BMW iX, the M3 Competition does everything close to perfection and if you can look past its design, you’ll find a rewarding driving experience that might just surprise you.

Video: BMW i4 and iX playing on Austrian Sölden Iceberg

Both the  BMW iX and BMW i4 electric models are now being delivered worldwide to various customers. The cars are ready to take on the world and since we’re entering winter right now, BMW set up a photo and video shoot with the two, close to home, in Austria. The Sölden Iceberg was picked as the ideal location, due to its high altitude and snow-covered surface. Sitting at a hefty altitude of 2,830 meters above sea level, Solden is the perfect place to test your skills behind the wheel in winter conditions and maybe even ski a little in between runs.

Leaving skiing aside, the Solden iceberg was also picked because it is home to a proper BMW Driving Experience center, where some of the best trainers in the industry come every winter to hold sessions with aspiring drivers. The BMW Driving Experience centers have recently celebrated their 45th anniversary, being the first such service offered by a car manufacturer. There’s also another reason why Austria is important for the iX and i4.

The Steyr factory is responsible for making a few bits for the two electric models. For example, the body panels for the BMW iX and i4 are done here along with the electric motors and gearbox. The precision of the Steyr factory played a big role in securing this responsibility for the new electric models. Furthermore, the cooling systems for both the iX and i4 have been designed and developed by the Steyr engineers. Now let’s watch them in action!

BMW iX Alleged Options List and Features Leaked

Without a doubt, the most important upcoming vehicle on the Bavarian horizon is the BMW iX. It’s not as exciting as something like the BMW M5 CS but it’s absolutely more important. The iX will be BMW’s first proper bespoke EV since the original i3 back in 2014 and it’s supposed to be the car that will show the world BMW’s electric might. So, naturally, we’re keeping a close eye on any information regarding BMW’s upcoming EV and an alleged options and features list for the iX has just been released.

You can check this alleged list of options and features over at Bimmerpost but there are some interesting ones that we should talk about. For starters, there are going to seven different wheel options? That seems excessive but there’s said to be one 20″ wheel, which will be standard, four 21″ wheels and two 22″ wheels. That’s a total of seven different options, which is a lot. However, there’s a possibility that several of those are just different finish options on the same wheel.

2022 bmw ix interior 08 830x5532022 bmw ix interior 08 830x553

The next interesting option on the list is the Sky Lounge Roof. We’re assuming it’s going to be some large panoramic sunroof but it may be larger than any other BMW’s before it, if it’s going to get a fancy-pants name. Also, with Tesla putting massive glass roofs in its cars, it’s likely BMW wants to follow suit. Also, being that the BMW iX has a bespoke EV architecture and strong carbon fiber-enforced chassis, its roof structure might be strong enough to support a massive glass roof in the event of a rollover crash.

It’s also said that the iX will get an interior camera of some sort. We’re not sure what that means, where it will be placed or what it will be used for but there’s allegedly going to be a camera inside the cabin. Could it be to look at the driver, for autonomous driving functions, to ensure they’re paying attention? Who knows.

Apparently, there are two new features dubbed “Personal CoPilot” and “Natural Interaction”, with no description of what they are. Though, we can attempt a guess. The “Personal CoPilot” seems like some form of high-level autonomy, as the name “CoPilot” seems to suggest that it will help the driver drive. It’s also a clever jab at Tesla’s Autopilot, which is a complete misnomer. While “Natural Interaction” seems like it might be some new form of either Gesture Control or voice recognition software.

2022 bmw ix exterior 29 830x5532022 bmw ix exterior 29 830x553

Further down the list, it mentions “Fully Autonomous Driving” but that’s almost certainly not going to be featured on the iX, unless BMW pulls some horsecrap Tesla-esque move to offer a feature that doesn’t yet exist.

These are all the features on the list that we didn’t already know. Some of the ones we already knew of were the optional two-axle air suspension, the B&W surround sound system and quad-zone A/C. But the new ones listed above are certainly interesting and we’ll see if they actually do end up making it to production soon enough.
