2022 BMW X5 – What’s Changed for the New Model Year

This current-generation BWM X5 is among the best SUVs the brand has ever made. It’s good looking, has a great interior, and drives better than an SUV of its size deserves to. There’s really nothing the BMW X5 does poorly. Which is why it’s such a popular SUV among customers, making it one of BMW’s best-selling vehicles.

Current BMW X5 customers who are looking to trade their vehicle in for a brand-new 2022 model, or potential new X5 customers, should know that there will be some option and package changes for 2022 models. Some as-standard features are gone, some are new, and some of the optional features have been changed around, too.

Standard Equipment

  • Wireless Charging has been removed.
  • Enhanced Bluetooth added for 40i and 45e models.

As-standard equipment suffers from chip shortages, as the BMW X5’s wireless charging has been removed entirely. It used to be a standard feature on the X5 but now it’s not even an option. It’s not the biggest bummer, as wireless charging is slow and gets your phone’s temperature so hot it’s hard to touch, but BMW’s wireless AppleCar Play always paired so well with it, as there was never any need to plug your phone in. Now, you’ll have to for 2022 models.

Optional packages and Equipment

  • Convenience Package has been removed for 40i models.
    • Remote engine start, 4-zone climate control, wireless charging
    • WiFi hotspot + 3gb or 3-month trial, enhanced USB and Bluetooth
  • Premium Package
    • Convenience Package contents have been removed.
  • Executive Package
    • Convenience Package contents have been removed.
  • M Sport Package
    • Option of 2-axle air suspension has been removed for 40i models.
    • Option of 3rd row + rear air suspension has been removed for 40i models.
  • New Climate Comfort Package added.
    • Front & rear heated seats, heated armrests and steering wheel,
    • 4-zone climate control
  • 2-axle air suspension has been removed as an individual option.
  • Glass Controls added as an individual option.
  • Front & rear heated seats removed as an individual option.

As for optional packages, several packages will be removed from BMW’s option list. For instance, the convenience package is gone for the X5 xDrive40i. However, its four-zone climate control comes back with the climate control package, which also adds heated front and rear heated seats, and heated armrests. A few other options were removed, though, which can be frustrating for customers.

Colors and Interior Trim

  • Sparkling Brown Metallic and Dravit Grey Metallic have been added.
  • No interior trim changes.

In terms of colors, the BMW X5 gains two new exterior colors but no interior trim changes. The two colors are nice ones and fit the X5’s handsome exterior well.

2021 BMW X5 – One of the most diversified lineups in BMW’s portfolio

The X5 is not only BMW’s first ever Sports Activity Vehicle, but also one of their best selling models around the world. Manufactured in Spartanburg, the 2021 BMW X5 is in its fourth generation, one more refined than ever. The G05 X5 was one of the first BMWs to adopt a massive kidney grille, a trend that has now trickled down and up the BMW lineup. But compared to the recent and more controversial BMW models, the 2021 BMW X5 has been quickly embraced by BMW customers, despite having one of the largest kidney grilles ever seen on an X5.

Furthermore, the 2021 BMW X5 also stands out with an extensive lineup that caters to a wide demographic and customer base. Built upon the CLAR platform, the G05 X5 offers customers the choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid models. Not all markets get the full lineup, but markets like Europe do enjoy the full spectrum of powertrains. Today, we’re going to outline the entire BMW X5 lineup, irrespective of the market, with a focus on the engine offerings.

2021 BMW X5 xDrive25d

The entry-level X5 diesel is offered in European markets and it is the most affordable G05 X5 you can buy today. In Germany, the X5 xDrive25d is priced at 68,700 euros. The 2.0 liter four cylinder engine delivers 227 horsepower and 450 Nm (331 lb-ft) of torque. The average fuel consumption is around 6 liter per 100 km (39 MPG). Performance wise, the 2021 BMW X5 xDrive25d runs from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.5 seconds.

2021 BMW X5 xDrive30d

The second out of the three X5 diesels offered – the BMW X5 xDrive30d – is priced at 72,800 euros. It uses the same 2.0 liter four-cylinder turbo diesel, but with a bit more power: 282 horsepower and 650 Nm (479 ft-lb) of torque. The average fuel consumption is also around 6 liter per 100 km (39 MPG). Performance wise, the 2021 BMW X5 xDrive25d runs from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds.

2021 BMW X5 xDrive40d

The most expensive diesel of the X5 family is the X5 xDrive40d. It’s the only X5 diesel with a six-cylinder, 3.0 liter engine and massive power. With 335 horsepower and 700 Nm or 516 lb-ft of torque, top diesel X5 runs from standstill to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds. The average fuel consumption is 6.2 liter per 100 km (38 MPG). And it is priced accordingly at 78,200 euros. Along with the BMW X5 M50i, the X5 40d is one of the most fun to drive BMW SUVs today.

2021 BMW X5 xDrive40i

Moving over to the petrol lineup of the X5 and at the entry-level spot we have the X5 xDrive40i. The popular gasoline-powered X5 hides a 3.0 liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine under the hood. The B58 is a marvelous engine and arguably one of the best engines from Munich. With 340 horsepower and 449 Nm (330 lb-ft) of torque, the BMW X5 xDrive40i gets to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. The fuel consumption takes a hit compared to the diesel counterparts, but it’s still within acceptable norms: 8 liter per 100/km (29.4 MPG).

BMW prices the X5 xDrive40i at 74,299 euros in Germany and at $61,700 in United States.

2021 BMW X5 sDrive40i

BMW of North America also offers a rear-wheel drive only X5. The sDrive40i has the same performance as the xDrive model, but it is priced about $2,300 cheaper – $59,400. It’s not the most popular option in the United States where customers associate SUVs with an all-wheel drive system.

2021 BMW X5 M50i

The only V8 engine in the X5 lineup is the BMW X5 M50i. With the serious upgrade the 4.4-liter twin-turbo N63 engine received recently, the X5 M50i makes 523 horsepower and 750 Nm (553 ft-lb) of torque. That’s enough to propel the X5 M50i to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. Not that the fuel consumption matters at this price point, but here it is nonetheless: 10.7 liter per 100 km/h (21 MPG). Speaking of the price, the 2021 BMW X5 M50i sells for 99,500 euros in Europe and $82,800 in the US.

2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e

The only plug-in hybrid X5 is also, in our opinion, one of the most compelling X5 models today. Not only it’s highly efficient and fairly green, it’s also quite powerful. The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e uses the same drivetrain as the BMW 745e PHEV. This plug-in hybrid model is powered by a combination of a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and an electric motor. Together, the new PHEV SUV generates a system output of 389 hp, also thanks to an electric motor still located between the thermal unit and the gearbox, good for 110 HP. Torque is also up to 600 NM (442 lb-ft).

At $65,400, it is more expensive than the X5 xDrive40i, but it’s proven to be quite popular with U.S. customers.

Shift gears to winter with your BMW X5

Winter is coming and not in the Game of Thrones ice-zombie way — more like the snowy, slidey, crashy kind of way. At least that’s the kind of winter it can be if you don’t properly prepare your vehicle for winter driving. For those of us that live in the snow belt, BMWBLOG has gathered some winter weather prep tips to help keep the wheels turning with some assistance from traction control too.

Properly outfitted, your BMW can be set to get you through the worst winter weather safely, while protecting both you and your car. To highlight some of the best winter car tips, we’ve picked the highly popular BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle which comes standard with Active Driving Assistant. The X5 has many features to help reassure your safety on slippery roads during the winter.

Adequate Winter Tires

Like the rubber boots you wear on your feet during the winter, it’s just as important for your BMW to have good shoes to help provide sure footing when dashing through the snow. We recommend a set of four snow tires. Trust us on this; winter tires cost way less than bent metal. If you are driving on high-performance summer tires like those that come standard on a BMW X5M, even with the advanced M xDrive All-Wheel Drive System on board, the tires are truly worthless in the snow and are no match for the commanding 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 that boasts up to 617 horsepower. Winter tires are actually legally mandated during the winter in Germany.

I like to use a set of dedicated winter tires mounted on a different set of wheels. Chains work too but are more cumbersome because you have to put them on to drive in the snow and remove them before you drive on dry pavement so they don’t self-destruct. I have used a set of good all seasons, and though they are not bad in the snow, they are not as sure-footed as good snow tires.

Keep Your Car Pristine With Premium Floor Mats

A great set of winter mats are always part of my winter routine. Whether it’s the BMW X5, the i3 electric vehicle or even the E92 M3 sportscar, a premium set of floor liners have always been my go-to item. When you are walking to your car, you get snow and slush on your feet and definitely do not want that on your carpeted floor mats.

My personal favorite winter mats are the FloorLiners made by WeatherTech. The reason I like them so much is that they are specifically made for your particular vehicle’s floor. The edges of the WeatherTech mats reach up several centimeters all the way around, tuck into the edges of the footwells and go all the way up behind the pedals. The benefit of this is that when the snow and slush on my feet invariably melts on the floor under the pedals, the cupped sides keep the snowmelt from sliding over the edge and getting on the carpeted interior.

Wipers and Windshield Wiper Fluid

Next, I like to make sure my wipers are in good shape as the cold can make rubber even stiffer. Great vision in bad weather is important and stiff wipers just won’t clean the windshield as well. You also need to make sure your windshield wiper fluid is full and has the correct fluid in it so it does not freeze. BMW puts good fluid in from the factory, you just need to make sure it’s kept full and has a low freezing point. With the available Icon Adaptive Full LED Headlights with Laserlight, the BMW X5 illuminates the entire road for almost half a mile, providing unparalleled night time visibility that pierces through the hardest snowfalls.

Cargo Trunk Mats Are a Must

We are using our BMW X5 year round, including snowy weather as well as trips to the hardware store and pumpkin patch. Since I was using the WeatherTech FloorLiners, I decided to also install the Cargo Liner product. Compared to other similar products, the Weather Tech Cargo Liner tucks into the corners and wedges itself in there without buckling. Some other trunk liners tend to slide around and their less grippy surface lets stuff shift and spill more.

Weather Tech uses laser technology to measure the trunk of your BMW X5. The Cargo Liner has a lipped edge that will keep anything that gets spilled from coming in contact with your X5’s trunk. Another nice aspect is how grippy the trunk liner is when you set stuff on it.

Not Just a Clean BMW X5, But Also Safer

BMW X5 SUVs have gotten me through some of the worst winter weather imaginable – a complete white-out blizzard where you can no longer even tell where the road is on the open plains. Thank God for those reflective posts stuck on the sides of the road as there were no other cars to follow and too many vehicles off the road to count. Our X5 ended up being one of the last vehicles through, and then they had closed I-70 Interstate.

Another time, going up Vail Pass in the Colorado Rockies during an epic snow dump with multiple vehicles stuck on the road, we had to navigate around them. All the while, our BMW X5 kept us going. When we got home and after a thorough car wash, our X5 looked as good as new. I just had to hose off the WeatherTech mats, dry them and put them back in.

2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i E53 X5 Comparison 2 of 22019 BMW X5 xDrive40i E53 X5 Comparison 2 of 2

Some cars will never go out of fashion. Most fans will immediately point to the E46 or E39 as timeless, classic BMWs and yes they still look good but I’m referring to a rather different breed. I’m talking about the E53 X5, the first of its name, as they would say in Westeros. The original X5 is, if you ask most enthusiasts, still a good looking car. It may be a BMW on stilts but the proportions are right and, to my eyes, it’s still a stunner.

Since it’s getting a bit old right now, you can snatch one up for incredibly low prices. The most beloved are the ones using a V8 engine but they are also rather expensive to maintain and, if you’re getting yourself one of the cheaper versions you can find, you can expect to invest some money back into it, to get it running. The guys from Fifth Gear took notice of the prices plummeting and did a short take on the X5 and its main rivals back in the day.

The one in charge of the buying tips for the E53 X5 is none other than Tiff Needell who was still with this outfit back in 2015, when the footage below was originally aired. Now, what should you look for when prospecting the market for a first-generation X5? According to Tiff, you need to check the gearbox is doing its thing just right, not holding the gears too high. The gearboxes on this car are known to fail at around 120,000 miles and since these are older cars, that kind of mileage is not unheard of.

Turbos on diesel mills also have a tendency to tap out after a while according to the video below. Therefore look out for excessive smoke at the back or turbo whine when driving the car and listen out for some banging noise coming from the rear axle as the subframe bushings might need replacing. That’s about it according to Tiff but we all know there are some other issues you might want to look out for, right? Let us know in the comments below. The action starts at the 21-minute mark.
